FAQ

Do I have to be a woman to sing with Calliope?

No! Calliope welcomes people of all genders 18+ years of age who feel comfortable singing in a treble range. The current choir makeup includes cis, trans, and non-binary singers.

When/where are rehearsals?

Rehearsals are on Thursday from 6:45-9pm in the Mac-Groveland Neighborhood of St. Paul. Rehearsals run through both Fall and Spring seasons with a break in December.

While we don’t rehearse in summer there are opportunities to table at pride recruitment events and gather for social events.

When are the Fall and Spring Seasons?

The Fall season runs from September to December. There is a winter break in the second half of December. The Spring season runs January to May.

Accepted members can choose to participate in one or both seasons for the year.

When/where are concerts?

Calliope consistently has season concerts at the end of both the Fall and Spring seasons. They are typically in the afternoon on Saturday.

We also have outreach performances and some special events (like Cabaret) throughout the year. Information about these can be found on our concerts page, as well as our social media and through our newsletter!

What kinds of music do you sing?

Calliope sings many types of music across genres and eras, centered around social justice, empowerment and perseverance. Past concerts can be watched here. A playlist of some of the music we’ve sung in the past can be found here.

How can I get involved?

You can get involved in several ways! You can follow Calliope on social media, attend our concerts, donate your time or money to support our continued existence, or audition to join us in singing. More information about auditions (upcoming dates & what they entail) can be found here.

Is Calliope a LGBTQ+ chorus?

Calliope is a feminist chorus committed to anti-oppression action. We welcome members and supporters of all identities who hold a common love for music and social justice.

Do I have to read music to sing with Calliope?

No. You do not have to read music to audition or sing with Calliope. We provide sheet music to members but knowledge of musical notation is not required and our rehearsal style supports learning by ear as well as by sight.

Is there a cost for participation?

Calliope member dues are $300 for the entire year, or $150 for a half year. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. Accommodations in the form of volunteer hours or other arrangements can be discussed with the treasurer and membership liaison at the start of the season.

How does the group communicate with each other?

We’re a large group so clear community is vital. Formal internal communication consists of weekly email correspondence and announcements during rehearsal time. We also have a Discord channel for informal social communication.

What does the chorus name mean?

Calliope is both the name of the muse of vocal arts in Greek mythology and the name of a musical instrument. It represents the musical and feminist nature of our chorus.

Do you do other things than sing?

Yes! Members will gather throughout the year for social events like dinners, theater and movie outings, and other events. These events are organized by individuals and by our Social Committee.

Is there a Covid/Masking Policy?

Currently, masking is not required at rehearsals and is at each member’s discretion. Please see the full COVID-19 and Masking Policy for additional information.

If this policy is a concern or barrier for you joining the choir, please reach out to board@calliopewomenschorus.org.
