Auditions

Want to join Calliope? Our next auditions will be held August 2024!

Here’s what to know about the process:

Calliope is an inclusive SSAA choir that has members with a range of musical abilities. You don’t need to be able to read music to join. However, we do require a low-pressure audition.

Auditions may be done in-person or virtually. Our auditions are held at Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, while our virtual auditions are held over Zoom.

Street and lot parking is available. There are also bus stops nearby served by Metro Transit route 63.

Here’s what to know before you sign up for an audition:
1. Each audition slot is 15 minutes long.
2. Arrive 10 minutes early.
3. Please prepare a short solo song approximately 1 to 3 minutes in length to perform. You are encouraged to bring a prepared piece with accompaniment (with a copy of music for our accompanist) but are welcome to sing a selection acapella if you prefer. This can be a song of any genre — we want you to sing something you’re comfortable with that showcases your voice.
4. The audition will also check vocal range, pitch matching, and aural recall.
5. You’ll have an opportunity to ask any questions you have about the choir.

Calliope member expectations:

Calliope rehearses every Thursday from September through May from 7 to 9 p.m., with a break in December for the winter holidays. We rehearse at Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul.

Additionally, we have a couple of Saturday retreats throughout the year and dress rehearsals before concerts. These dates would be provided to you in advance.

We love to have fun singing, but also want to deliver strong musical quality to our audiences. Members may miss no more than three rehearsals per concert season.

Our year consists of two concert seasons: September through December and January through May. If you’re concerned about this, don’t worry! We’re happy to talk with you about your specific situation and see if something can be worked out.

There are additional (optional but highly encouraged) sectional rehearsals, which are coordinated by section leaders based on availability and necessity.

Email board@calliopewomenschorus.org with any questions about the audition process.
